A growing number of states are regulating marijuana, but many don’t take potency into account when setting sales limits. Instead, they use the weight of a particular product or concentration of a cannabinoid to set maximum sale amounts. As a result, consumers can easily purchase high-potency cannabis, which is associated with more adverse outcomes.
Using data from 11 different sites in Amsterdam, Palermo, and London, researchers found that the use of high-potency cannabis is linked to an increased risk for psychotic disorder. The study compared people who reported using high-potency cannabis to those who used low-potency cannabis. In each city, the researchers found a higher incidence of psychotic disorder among daily cannabis users who reported using high-potency cannabis.

The study has a few limitations, including that it only collected samples of cannabis at a single time point, which might not accurately represent the THC concentration to which participants are regularly exposed over time. In addition, the cross-sectional design of this study makes it difficult to establish causality. Future longitudinal analyses with reliable measures of cannabis potency are needed.
