But there’s a new trend emerging in which some people use psilocybin to improve their mental and emotional health, without producing any visual effects. This practice is called microdosing.

It’s difficult to measure how many people are using this technique because the psychedelic drug is still illegal in most places, but it’s gaining popularity nonetheless. Some studies point to psilocybin’s ability to ease anxiety and depression, promote neuroplasticity (the brain’s ability to reorganize and form new neural connections), and help with spiritual exploration and self-reflection.

Other studies have found that psilocybin can improve focus and creativity in the workplace and even boost the immune system. However, concrete evidence is sparse because psilocybin remains a Schedule I drug with very limited clinical trials.

Despite this, it’s become very popular for some women to take small doses of psilocybin to achieve these benefits. The practice has given rise to a community of mothers who are sharing their experiences online, along with online and brick-and-mortar support groups.

We spoke to several moms who are part of this burgeoning movement and asked them about their experience. They spoke about their personal journeys, how they microdose, and how they feel it helps them be a better mom. We also talked to Dr. Russell Newcombe, aka “Dr Nuke,” who researches psychedelics, drug use and harm reduction, and has a background in addiction treatment.
